If you’ve felt your spirit start to stir for festive flavors and holiday recipes, you’ll want to peruse the supermarket cheese case carefully as you load your cart with the fixings.
On Tuesday, November 4, 2024, a firm producing dairy products under nine different brand names issued an urgent notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Savencia Cheese USA advises that the recall affects six popular cheese products sold at various retailers, including one that was sold at the bulk grocery chain Aldi. Those products sold at Aldi were distributed in six states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, and Missouri.
The announcement reveals the brand is recalling select soft ripened cheeses due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogenic bacteria that can cause Listeriosis.
According to the safety notice, six Brie and Camembert products are included in the recall. They can be identified using the following details, including their “Best by” date, Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), and UPC codes:
- Emporium Selection Brie, 12 or 8 ounces, “best by” date of 12/24/2024, GTIN of 10041498111325, UPC-A of 004149811132, and UPC-B of 041498111328
- Supreme Oval 7oz, 6 or 7 ounces, “best by” date of 12/24/2024, GTIN of 10071448504211, UPC-A of 007144850421, and UPC-B of 071448504214

The recall announcement states the affected products had “limited regional distribution in the United States.” However, it does not specify which regions or specific states are affected by the recall. The problem was discovered during routine testing, in which Listeria was discovered on processing equipment at a manufacturing facility in Lena, Illinois.
The Cleveland Clinic says that in healthy adults, Listeria is most likely to cause temporary symptoms of high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and stomach upset. However, Listeriosis can cause serious or even fatal illness in seniors, children, and people with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, exposure to Listeria can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
At the time of the recall’s announcement, there were no confirmed reports of adverse health events related to the affected products. However, consumers are urged not to eat any products distributed by Savencia Cheese USA that bear the identifying markers. Instead, throw away any affected products you may have in your possession, or return them to your place of purchase for a refund.
If you believe you are experiencing a reaction related to the recall, contact your doctor for medical assistance and find more details on reporting your case in the announcement linked above.
